At NEC, we support the different architectures of mobile / cellular infrastructure.
One key in our offer is the ASIC technology. This allows our customers to design
their own best fitting components, using NEC not only as a foundry but including
the full service around the design. A different approach is using programmable
chips. Here NEC offers its off-the shelf DSPs. But besides the traditional processing,
NEC has developed the DRP, a Dynamically Re-configurable array of processing
elements. Still in the transition from research to a commercial product, it
is an important step to consider early for definition of future roadmap.
As the mobile infrastructure is the link between the network and the mobile
users, it incorporates a radio interface. Here NEC is proud of its RF components.
The devices of a mobile infrastructure network like BTS, Node-B, BSC, RNC, SGSN,
GGSN, MSC, MGW are build on standards. Such standards mainly describe principles,
functions, interfaces and test methods for interoperability rather than any
implementation. NEC has taken some relevant interface standards, especially
those which are not subject to rapid changes and implemented them in Application
Specific Standard Products - ASSP. These chips help to cut down development
efforts, cost and risk at our customers as they can rely on proven solutions
from NEC. Examples are ATM / SDH devices, special processors for ATM / IP convergence,
and LVDS transceivers for backplane communication.
