Terminals
With data winning more share in communications, it becomes beneficial to optimise
networks for data traffic - and finally to transport voice over data protocols.
In an office environment, with using voice over IP (VoIP) and voice over DSL
(VoDSL) only an Ethernet cable network has to be maintained. New multi-functional
terminals putting voice on the data packets require high performance processing
and integrated networking capability.
NECs RISC controllers fit into this market segment. But also when using
other media, for example radio links, wireless LANs or even the mains power
lines for data transfers, these processors can be used in access points and
customer premise equipment.
Mobile terminals show an ever increasing feature set - and this with smaller
phones and longer battery life. Semiconductor devices like NECs application
processors and graphics controllers are specially designed for power efficient
tasks in mobile phones.
And if the RISC processor is too powerful, simple 8- to 16 bit micro controllers,
offering e.g. LCD control, I/O ports and simple serial communication, are available
from one of the worlds leading micro controller manufacturers - from NEC.
Anticipating high volume, combined with the need for low space, weight and
power consumption, many functions of a (mobile) terminal should be integrated
in a specially low power ASIC. Again NEC is a partner of choice. And for mobile
terminals, NEC offers dedicated RF components.
