Detectors for fire, smoke and light barriers as well as motion, entry detect, glass break and fire alarm systems are similar in operation which require the same type of microcontroller/-processor. Usually each sensor is part of a complex system, where individual sensors are interconnected via a serial communications bus.

NEC's 8 bit micro range (78K0/78K0S) is ideally suited for these applications.
