What is IO-Link?

IO-Link LogoSensors and actuators have so far been connected to control devices via either digital (24V) or analogue (4…20m, +/-10V) signals. These same sensors and actuators are now more complex and intelligent. As well as acquiring measurement data, they now generate process, diagnostic, and parameter data, and are also much more configurable.

The IO-Link protocol allows developers to truly realize the added value of this increased intelligence by enabling a direct connection to the control level of the automation hierarchy. Control elements in automation can now see all the way down to the sensor in a standardized manner.

Key advantages of IO-Link

  • All on one cable: process/parameter/diagnostic data on a single cable
  • Backwards compatible and flexible: Combine IO-Link and non IO-Link together
  • Low cost deployment: Low cost un-shielded cables
  • Easy field bus integration: Fieldbus neutral protocol
