NEC Electronics Europe held its second Industrial Open Day (IOD) which took place in Barcelona from 16th-18th October 2008. Where the theme was ‘Visions meet Solutions’.

This unique event brought together over one hundred market-leading customers and allowed them to experience first hand NEC Electronics’ latest technology developments, thus providing a platform for continued partnership into the next decade and beyond.

The event was backed by an interactive exhibition for the key sectors of Motor Control, Building Management, Industrial Automation and Healthcare and incorporated demonstrations of the latest technology solutions within Microcontrollers, ASIC, ASSP, Wired & Wireless Communications, Power Management, Sensors, TFT-LCD, Fibre Optics and Microwave devices.

Motor control represents a significant investment by NEC Electronics to provide market leading solutions based on its ‘All Flash microcontrollers’ for 3 phase motor & appliance controls.

At IOD NEC demonstrated sensorless motor control, wireless communications & HMI solutions in the form of colour TFT, LCD and touch panel controls.

Also demonstrated were NEC’s unique MR sensors ideally suited to home appliance applications.

Building management systems have many facets which includes lighting, Fire & Security, metering and HVAC. NEC Electronics is able to address each aspect of this market with its semiconductor and TFT display solutions.

At IOD NEC demonstrated a fully automated home. Known as the Smart Home Application Platform (SHAP), it provided an insight on the solutions NEC can provide for a fully automated building using Zigbee, LED lighting control, energy efficient motor control and sophisticated LCD-TFT controls. All demonstrated with an emphasis on energy conservation.

Healthcare technology is currently undergoing a revolution as the point of care moves from expensive post diagnosis to the more cost effective pre-diagnostics and consumer self diagnostics.

At IOD NEC demonstrated the latest in Microcontroller & TFT LCD technology aimed specifically at the healthcare diagnostic and therapy segments. This included examples of solar powered heart rate monitors, low power body mass indicators and the latest advanced colour and monochrome TFT monitors used in therapy and X-Ray equipment. Europe leads the world in the advancement and standardisation of Industrial automation technology. NEC Electronics recognises this fact with established products, solutions and support dedicated to this specialised application segment.

At IOD NEC Electronics was able to demonstrate the latest technologies in industrial communications and control from real time Ethernet to field bus communications in the form of IO-Link all based on its class leading ASIC and microcontroller technologies.

The interface between humans and machine demands increasingly sophisticated technology to make information easier to access and controls more intuitive and flexible to use. This coupled with more demanding environments such as direct sun light viewing and touch sensitive controls.

At IOD NEC LCD technologies demonstrated the range and flexibility of its advanced high reliability TFT touch panel LCD displays. From non-uniform ‘heart shaped’ displays to electronic paper and monochrome displays suitable for healthcare applications.

Central to all Industrial systems is the ability to communicate effectively both internally and externally to other systems in a timely and efficient manner.

At IOD NEC Electronics was able to interactivly demonstrate a range of industry standard communication protocols from not just the physical but also the software protocol layers from real time Ethernet to wireless solutions including Zigbee and USB.
