78K0R/Fx3 is NEC's automotive qualified family of 16-bit microcontrollers which offers a cost effective solution for higher performance low-end body applications. The integrated 3-stage pipeline and extended 24 MHz CPU operation enable these controllers to operate more than 6 times faster than 8-bit 78K0 microcontrollers.
In addition to supporting standard serial interfaces like UART, IIC, and CSI (SPI), there is an enhanced LIN interface with hardware support for automatic baud rate generation and detection.
They are equipped with enhanced timer structures (TAU) with up to 26 channels and an A/D converter with up to 24 channels including scan functionality. Many of these interfaces can utilize DMA for automatic data storage in order to offload the CPU. Additionally, this family includes data flash which can perform simultaneous code execution and EEPROM emulation which allows designers to eliminate external EEPROMs.
The 78K0R/Fx3 offers flexibility with configurations ranging from 24 to 256 KB of Flash memory in packages from 30 - 100 pins. All versions come with LIN, and CAN is optional in some versions. They have attractive low power characteristics with a typical full-speed operating current of 8.9 mA and a stand-by current of only 5 uA while the watchdog timer is active.
