V850E/Dx3 – NEC Electronics’ new 32-bit microcontroller family for dashboard applications

Düsseldorf, Germany; Kawasaki, Japan; Santa Clara, USA — 26 Sep 2005

NEC Electronics today announced the V850E/Dx3, the next-generation D_Line automotive dashboard controller family. Developed in NEC Electronics’ 0.15 µm technology, the Dx3 is the enhanced shrink version of the successful Dx2 family. It combines enhanced features with NEC Electronics’ latest Flash technology and meets exacting quality standards. Moreover, it has all the advantages of NEC Electronics’ proven family approach, which offers application-specific features while maintaining the high scalability that supports platform-based developments.

V850E/Dx3 is based on the 32-bit RISC CPU V850 and includes application-specific peripherals such as integrated stepper motor drivers, LCD controller/driver, parallel LCD bus interface and sound generator. These features make the Dx3 a good choice for driver information systems, such as instrument clusters including display and diagnostic functions. Up to 16 A/D channels, 2 CAN interfaces, I2C bus, and seventeen 16-bit timers complete a comprehensive feature set.

The Dx3 splits into two sub-families. The basic version runs at 24 MHz CPU speed, while the high-end version runs at 48 MHz. The family concept provides scalable memory options from 128 Kbytes to 1 Mbytes Flash and up to 32 Kbytes RAM in a 144-pin QFP package. With the choice of derivatives there will always be a product that is a close fit to application requirements. This makes it easy to move up to a bigger device when memory demand rises.

With the new V850E/Dx3 family, NEC Electronics is anticipating market demand for highly integrated application-specific functions that enable customers to reduce overall system cost and development effort. For more user-friendliness and improved driver-vehicle interaction, instrument cluster displays must integrate more and more information. And they must present it in high-resolution colour, with clarity and flair. The amount of specialized information – from multi-language text to graphically precise icons – being communicated is mushrooming and demand for memory is rapidly increasing as a result.

The V850E/Dx3 was developed to add value to your development in terms of flexibility, scalability and system cost. The Dx3 family lets you react easily to changing requirements. Salient benefits available with the Dx3 include reuse of core and peripheral software, pin-to-pin compatibility and standard core support.

The whole Dx3 family needs just a single tool environment. All Dx3 controllers are qualified for the automotive temperature range (-40 to +85° C). First samples are scheduled for Q1/2006.
