NEC Electronics Joins the Symbian Platinum Program

KAWASAKI, Japan — 17 Oct 2005

NEC Electronics Corporation announced that it has joined the Symbian Platinum Program to support the growing market for mobile phones based on Symbian OS™, a global industry standard operating system for mobile phones. As a Platinum Partner, NEC Electronics is developing prototype solutions that incorporate Symbian OS, and sharing the latest information concerning Symbian OS with customers in an effort to shorten development times for new handset models with advanced capabilities.

As a result of the agreement, NEC Electronics will deliver the Symbian OS platform on such advanced solutions as the MP211 application processor series, enabling mobile handset manufacturers to seamlessly port their existing software resources to NEC Electronics’ semiconductors for 3G mobile phones.

“Symbian OS is recognized as one of the world’s leading operating systems for mobile phones, and NEC Electronics is pleased to support the growing number of mobile handset manufacturers worldwide that have selected Symbian OS,” stated Masakazu Yamashina, general manager, Mobile Systems Division, NEC Electronics.

“We are delighted that NEC Electronics has joined the Symbian Platinum Program, and look forward to working together to port their chip solutions for third generation handsets to the Symbian ecosystem,” stated Haruhiko Hisa, president, Symbian Japan.

To keep pace with the growing complexity of mobile handsets, which now include functions such as videoconferencing, internet, streaming video, terrestrial digital broadcasts, and games, as well as standard voice and camera functions, mobile handset manufacturers require robust software platforms to handle these high-performance features. NEC Electronics is committed to delivering both hardware and software solutions to meet the needs of this growing market, by offering semiconductor solutions that support Symbian OS as well as industry standard Linux operating environment, and will continue to pursue growth in the rapidly expanding market for third generation mobile phones.
