NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH and Arcos Technologies Announce Innovative Solution to enable ‘DVR in every room’Combination of NEC Electronics Europe and Arcos LSI Circuits allows non-DVR Set Top Boxes to provide DVR functionality in multiple rooms with no quality lossIBC, Amsterdam, 09 Sep 2004 NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH, a leading manufacturer of System-on-Chip (SoC) and Arcos Technologies Ltd announce the joint development of a new Home Video Networking (HVN) solution for multi-client DVR built around NEC Electronics’ EMMArchitecture2 Digital Video Recorder (DVR) device in combination with Arcos HVN-S™ (HVN for satellite) technology. Targeting the growing markets of DVR and home video networking, the solution allows up to four concurrent viewers in different locations of a dwelling to watch or record independent digital TV programs including pay TV. Until now video streaming from a gateway DVR to multiple client TVs was limited to distributing the same program to all clients using PAL/NTSC encoded UHF signals. However the use of PAL/NTSC encoded Composite Video Broadcast Signal (CVBS) impacts the video quality, due to bandwidth limitations, and the audio which is relayed in mono only. These limitations are even more noticeable in the rapidly growing Flat Panel TV market which requires either analogue component video signals or digital inputs such as HDMI for good picture quality. Now with the advent of NEC Electronics Europe DVR platform and Arcos Technologies HVN-S™ solution, it is possible for pay TV broadcasters to network a central DVR to client Set-Top Boxes (STBs) using existing installed coax cables. Nick Russell, Digital AV marketing manager of NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH said, “The beauty of this system lies in its use of standard legacy digital STBs, without modification, eliminating the quality loss and allowing multiple independent viewing of content from the server DVR. In essence, broadcasters will now be able to provide single, dual or multiple DVR facilities to the whole household dependant only on the number of client STBs” Yariv Reches CEO of Arcos Technologies commented: “We have developed a mini digital broadcasting station aimed at Customer Premises Equipment market by providing real time DVB-S signal encoding and QPSK modulation to create an authentic Multi Program Transport Stream (MPTS) on L-Band frequency (0.95-2.1 GHz). This solution along with NEC Electronics Europe’s EMMArchitecture2 SoC will provide the next generation of multimedia centric based applications.” Samples, tools and full documentation are available. ### About Arcos Technologies Media Contacts Arcos Technologies ###
