NEC Electronics Europe establishes Turkish DigitalAV Application CentreLocal EMMA™ System on Chip Support to Enhance Customer SuccessDUESSELDORF, Germany, 19 Jan 2007 NEC Electronics Europe announces the opening of a new Digital AV Application Centre in Izmir, Turkey. The team of engineers will assist customers in the design of set-top box, digital televisions & DVD Recorders based on NEC Electronics’ world leading EMMArchitecture™ System-on-Chip LSIs. The establishment of the office is a response to the rapidly growing market share of the EMMA™ series of MPEG Decoders in major consumer electronics markets and the growth potential of the Turkish market, Turkish manufacturers alone make over 20 million TV, DVD and STB devices per year. The Application Centre will enable rapid and on-site support to help NEC Electronics customers take advantage of the very large opportunities they have. This is a huge potential market for the EMMA series of Digital AV devices including MPEG Decoding and Demodulation technologies which offer key benefits to manufacturers such as a broad range of powerful LSIs covering multiple end applications with a common architecture thus increasing re-usability of software, saving R&D resources and reducing time to market – all at costs matched to the highly competitive and cost-driven consumer market. The Izmir office was opened by Rob Green, President of NEC Electronics Europe and Shigeo Niitsu,Japanese Vice President of the business unit responsible for the EMMA series world-wide. ”We highly recognise the importance of Turkish manufacturers in this global market-place so this Application Centre will make our response time to local customers even faster and ensure that we maximise both their and our potential in this dynamic market” Shigeo Niitsu said. “NEC Electronics’ is proud to have EMMA in the core chipsets which are integral to the products of major TV and consumer brand names across the globe. This success is partly due to world-class support and dependability”. Furthermore, Rob Green pointed out that “Izmir is only 1 hour from Istanbul and is itself a centre of Digital Consumer R&D and manufacturing. Our new applications team is well positioned to support NEC Electronics Europe’s strategy to maintain and increase its share of the growing Digital Consumer market". The Application Centre enhances the pan-European EMMA support network centred in Milton-Keynes, UK and Velizy, France. EMMA global support centres have recently been strengthened in China, Korea and the USA. These support centres are complemented by an increasing number of design houses with expertise in EMMA-based design from Scandinavia to India. These moves are in line with NEC Electronics global aim to make the EMMA series a global platform standard. NEC Electronics continually strives to provide improved services to its customers, and expects that the measures introduced today will enable the company to further increase its market share in the rapidly growing field of Digital AV. System LSIs for digital consumer applications are part of NEC Electronics’ core business. Since the company launched the world’s first system LSI for digital broadcast STB’s in 1998, it has launched numerous market-leading devices based on the company’s EMMArchitecture™. The company's goal is to achieve a 30 percent market share of Digital AV System-on-chip LSIs based on EMMA architecture by 2010.
