NEC Electronics Europe launches first Gateway Controller featuring SMSC’s MediaLB interface technology for seamless adoption to MOST® based infotainment systemsDUESSELDORF (Germany) and Hauppauge (USA) 09 Oct 2007 NEC Electronics Europe is introducing a new family member of NEC Electronics’ powerful 32-bit RISC microcontroller family for automotive gateway and body applications. Offering high performance, large memory size and fully-fledged communication interfaces, it is ideal for high-end gateway and other body applications in the automotive field. The V850E/CAG4-M takes the popular V850 family into the high-performance bracket and supports emerging standards in automotive communication interfaces. The V850E/CAG4-M utilizes MediaLB™ technology to efficiently transport multimedia data (Control, Packet, Synchronous and Asynchronous) through SMSC's intelligent network interface controllers (INICs) onto the MOST® network (Media Oriented Systems Transport). MediaLB is an inter-chip communication technology developed by SMSC and promoted as an open standard. The embedded MediaLB™ interface opens a new way to connect to the MOST® world for very high data throughput especially for asynchronous data transfer. The integrated macro supports the 3-pin MediaLB connection with up to 512FS and interfaces to all MOST® speed grades. MOST® is a de facto industry standard for automotive multimedia networking of high-bandwidth audio, video and control information and is deployed by most European automakers and more recently, by Asia manufacterers. The V850E/CAG4-M is optimized for automotive body applications like gateways. Besides MediaLB™ it provides 2 FlexRay® channels and control of up to 6 standard CAN (Controller Area Network) interfaces. The timer structure is suitable for body applications in that it offers multiple input capture and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output channels as well as dedicated motor control. The multi-LIN (Local Interconnect Network) master macro can connect all 6 LIN channels very efficiently, with minimum CPU interaction. With real-time clock and power-saving mode support, the device is right for many car body applications. The 16-bit parallel external bus interface allows the V850E/CAG4-M to connect to external components like RAM, while the FPU and 80 MHz RISC performance covers new fields of diagnostics and high-end server concepts. The device’s internal window watchdog, parity on RAM, ECC on flash (single error correction, double error detection), CRC unit and FPU also support safety-relevant applications.
